I thought I would be one of those lucky ones that wouldn't get morning sickness but at 7 weeks it started...nausea, gagging, barfing, and snarfing (yes, sneezing + barfing = snarfing). It's weird because the morning sickness truly was a blessing in disguise. I swear, if I didn't have the constant reminder of nausea, I know I would have been calling the doctor every day to make sure everything was okay. I lost 7 pounds between week 7 - 15 but by week 16 it all went away!
This is our first child so I am by no means an no expert but here are some tips that helped me get through the first three months:
1. Take prenatal vitamins!!! Most of the books and blogs I read recommended that you take it in the evening. My so-called "morning" sickness was more like late afternoon/evening sickness so it was really hard to take it at dinner or before bed. For me, it was better to take it in the morning with food because I had more of an appetite. People recommend ginger...if you are like me and don't really care for the taste of ginger, try Preggie pops. It is not a miracle cure for nausea but it helps! Lemon peel (like the kind from the crack seed store) helped too.
2. Have a "morning sickness" kit with you at all times! Mine included a couple of preggie pops, Lifesaver hard candies, granola bars, bottled water, 2 plastic bags (for unexpected barfing accidents) and wipes. It seriously saved me a few times in the car!
3. I really liked What to Expect When You are Expecting and The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy. The Girlfriends' Guide isn't really for those looking for scientific data and research but more for a chuckle or two...especially when you can't seem to explain all of the hormonal and body changes.
4. Sign up to get weekly emails...We loved getting the babycenter.com emails with how our little one was growing! My husband would refer to the little one as "our little grape" at week 9, "our little kumquat" at week 10, and "our little fig" at week 11.
5. Belly Band, Tummy Sleeve, Belly Bandit, Bella Band...buy it the minute you find out you are preggers. At week 6 my jeans stopped zipping and buttoning - somehow your hips prepare for childbirth, expand and bloating starts. It works on everything; jeans, shorts, work pants! AH-MAZ-ING! I am even going to wear it after pregnancy for those K-BBQ buffets and champagne brunches!
6. Lastly, I know you should wait until after your first trimester to start telling your family and friends, but I am a big mouth and just couldn't keep it shut. I have to say...if it wasn't for my girlfriends and all the mommy tips...I have no idea what I would have done! They gave me tips and advice that you just can't get from books! Thanks guys - the little one appreciates it!
